With the upcoming release of Directory, a catalog of approximately 1200 black and white images, it’s high time we acknowledge Ari Marcopoulos as more than an artist. The contemporary photographer and filmmaker is a leader in cultural anthropology, and has been capturing the auras of emerging counterculture movements like graffiti-art and skateboarding for over a quarter-century. A mixed bag of portraiture, landscapes, and candids, the new phone-book-sized publication chronicles his most recent body of work. Directory is another, more persistent perhaps, display of raw and intimate worlds within reach, punctuated with written commentary by critic Neville Wakefield.
Ari Marcopoulos: Directory is out in limited addition beginning April 5.
